JMCS Centenary Celebrations

An Idea…

The idea of a junior mountaineering club was conceived by three enterprising SMC members while
stormbound in the Mutthornhütte in the Bernese Alps in July 1925. The Junior Mountaineering Club
of Scotland was constituted on 30 August that year under the Narnain Boulder.

This year is, of course, the Centenary. The five Sections of the Club remain hugely active and are proud to have reached this milestone:

  1. Edinburgh
  2. Glasgow
  3. Lochaber
  4. London
  5. Perth

Marking the Occasion

We intend to mark this occasion with 3 events.

Anthology

Firstly, we have published a collection of stories covering the activities of all the Sections over the last
100 years. This anthology contains a mixture of historic articles charting the formation and early days of the Club, along with more recent material.

Much of the content has been specially commissioned for the publication, and features many hitherto untold stories and previously unseen photographs and images.

The book also uniquely dedicates a section to the individuals who have contributed material. Details of how to obtain a copy can be found here-

The book retails at £35.00 and SMC and JMCS members will be able to purchase a discounted copy for £25.00.

This is a limited print run so don’t miss out! See our dedicated news post to find more.

Centenary Meet

The first meet of the JMCS took place under the Narnain Boulder on the weekend of 29/30 August 1925.

The same dates in 2025 also fall on a weekend and it would seem appropriate that the
Centenary be celebrated in the location where the Club was formed. It is hoped that there will be a
gathering at the Boulder on these dates to celebrate this milestone.

More details will follow nearer the time.

Centenary Dinner

Finally, a Centenary Dinner will be held in the Carrbridge Hotel on Saturday 15 November 2025. It is
intended this will be a grand reunion of JMCS members past and present. Booking details will be
provided later in the year, but in the meantime, if you have JMCS connections and would like to
attend, please put the date in your calendar. Please also bring the event to the attention of any past
JMCS members you may know.

Logos New and Old

You can’t teach an old club new tricks

So the saying goes. But we have put our design skills to the test and given our cherished logo a ‘glow-up’.

Thistle themed rope and ice-axe.

It has served us well, showing the main climbing disciplines of the original members; trusty rope and ice-axe.
