The Blue sky before the Whiteout

Mill Cottage | 16–18 January

The weekend got off to a dubious start, with road closures on the A9 forcing some members to take the scenic route, while others sensibly delayed their travel until Saturday. Even after reaching the Cairngorms, the trials weren’t over, with icy conditions making the cottage driveway particularly tricky to negotiate.

Slant, mess of pottage

Saturday brought challenging winter conditions, with plenty of powder snow, strong winds, and a less-than-inspiring avalanche forecast. After inspecting several options, Dean and Will eventually found a suitable objective. Unconvinced by the avalanche risk on many routes, they opted for Slant on Mess of Pottage, a sensible choice that also avoided the crowds — with eight teams on Hidden Chimney and multiple parties on most other popular routes.

Douglas and Andrew set off for a walk up Mullach Clach a’ Bhlàir, but after battling through deep powder, they made the call to retreat and enjoy the warmth and sanctuary of Ruigh Aiteachain before heading back up the glen. Greg and Tom decided to avoid the worst of the weather altogether and enjoyed a more relaxed day in Aviemore, while Mark and Svetlanna made the most of the conditions by practising winter driving skills around Inverness.

The evening was spent in good spirits back at the cottage, with a warm fire, a touch of whisky, and plenty of great chat — a proper winter hut atmosphere.

Sunday continued to provide testing conditions. Greg and Tom embraced the challenge and headed onto the Cairngorm plateau to practise navigation. Dean and Will went Munro bagging over Càrn na Caim and A’Bhuidheanach Bheag, which also provided some challenging navigation, albeit with slightly less wind and

misery than the day before.

Not every weekend in Scotland is going to deliver perfect conditions, but there’s always something to be gained — whether that’s climbing, skills practice, good company, or, if all else fails, finding a coffee shop and eating cake.
